Weather changes bring along with them the much dreaded allergies giving rise watery eyes and noses along with constant sniffling. Below are five homemade anti-allergy remedies that include ingredients other than the popular honey.

Nettle-Peppermint Tea

Despite its ‘stingy’ reputation nettle is known for its many medicinal properties. This herb is known to benefit bone and skin, bring down blood pressure, relieving arthritis and is a natural allergy relief remedy. Peppermint contains special flavonoids called luteolin 7-0 rutinoside which slow down the secretion of histamines, helping reduce the uneasiness that comes along with them.

Ingredients and directions

I tsp of dried nettle leaves or a quarter cup chopped fresh nettle leaves

1 tsp of dried peppermint or a quarter cup of chopped fresh peppermint leaves

8 ounces of water

Honey and lemon to taste (optional)

Place the nettle and peppermint in a cup. Add boiling water to that and cover the cup. Strain after about 15 minutes. Add honey and lemon for taste. Drink this tea mixture twice a day for allergy relief.

Bee Pollen

If not honey then this will definitely help you with your allergies. But first you must make sure you aren’t allergic to bees or allergic to pollen that it sends you in an anaphylactic shock. To build your immunity against seasonal allergies you need to get local pollen which is free of chemicals. You can opt for granules, capsules or powder form of pollen and enjoy its crunchy and floral taste as is or with oatmeal or yogurt for breakfast.

You need to start taking these five months before you get your allergies. Begin by keeping a couple of granules under the tongue and let them dissolve or chew them. Increase the dosage by 1 granule the following day and continue this pattern for about two weeks till you are sure that you will have no reaction. Once it is set that you have no allergic reactions to pollen you can take one tablespoon a day throughout the season.

Red Onion Water

Quercetin, a water soluble chemical compound found in onions is known to decrease the production of histamines in the body, thereby reducing allergic symptoms. Quercetin also acts as a bronchodilator and inhibits inflammation.

1 red onion

4 cups water

Organic honey (to taste)

Cut thin slices of the onion and put them in water letting it be infused for 8-12 hours. Store in fridge for 3 to 4 days and drink once or twice daily. Add honey to your glass whenever you drink it.

Apple-Walnut Mix

This is a perfect blend to soothe your allergies. Walnuts are rich in magnesium that help control any wheezing or coughing and vitamin E that boosts immunity, keeping you away from allergens. Apples contain quercetin, naturally decreasing the histamine production. Many studies confirm that including apples in your daily diet does really keep allergies away.

1 apple

Half to one cup of walnuts

Cut small chunks of the apple and chop the walnuts. Put all in a bag and mix thoroughly. You can add other nuts like pecans and tasty ingredients like sunflower seeds and dried cherries.

Vitamin C enriched drink

The onset of allergies usually occur in warm, dry weather when instead of tea one would prefer to have cold refreshing drinks. This beneficial citrus drink provides you with the essential intake of vitamin C that provides nourishment and increases immunity so you can fight against the seasonal allergies.

Half a lemon

2 oranges

I tablespoon on organic honey

Squeeze and mix the orange and lemon juices and chill nicely. Add honey and ice cubes and consume daily.
